Wholesale fish market inaugurated in Guwahati city

Assam's Fisheries Minister Parimal Suklabaidya on Thursday inaugurated the Saraighat Wholesale Fish Market

GUWAHATI: Assam's Fisheries Minister Parimal Suklabaidya on Thursday inaugurated the Saraighat Wholesale Fish Market which has been set up jointly by FISHFED and the Saraighat Agricultural Society in Lokhra here.

The market has become operational from today and it will facilitate direct selling of different kinds of fishes directly by fish farmers to retail outlets across Guwahati city. Today's programme also witnessed the inauguration of a Live Fish Tank and Weighing Machine at the campus of the fish market.

Speaking at the occasion, Suklabaidya thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the flagship 'Pradhan Mantri Matsa Sampada Yojana' which has immensely benefitted fish farmers across India, including Assam. The State has witnessed a revolutionary increase in fish production after the BJP-led Government assumed charge, he said. The Minister also expressed his vision of full-fledged introduction of local fishes across the markets of Assam to ensure that the people of the State can enjoy healthy fish consumption. He also emphasized the need for, and importance of, adoption of scientific and hygienic approaches towards fish farming.

The ceremonial event was attended by Sushila Hazarika, chairperson of FISHFED, Dilu Sarma,VC of FISHFED, Mrigen Sarania, Mayor of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), Dr Dhruba Sarma, MD of FISHFED and other dignitaries.
