GUWAHATI: As a part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) and National Service Scheme (NSS) jointly organized the World Bicycle Day on June 3.

The aim is to encourage and motivate people to take up and adopt cycling in their daily lives for physical fitness activities and get rid of obesity, laziness, stress, anxiety, diseases etc. By adopting cycling, citizens will also facilitate reducing carbon footprints.

Through the Observance of the World Bicycle Day, citizens give the call to make a resolve to include physical activity for at least 30 minutes daily in their lives. Thus, on World Bicycle Day, the two organizations took to cycle rallies with 150 cyclists in two stretches – Kamakhya Temple Gate to Latasil Playground and Veterinary Field Khanapara to Sarusajai Stadium.

MP Queen Oja flagged off the rally of 75 cyclists at Kamakhya Temple Gate, and State Government's Sports Secretary Farooque Alom flagged off the rally at the Veterinary field in Khanapara. GMC councillors Ratna Singh and Ashim Saikia were also present at the flag-off ceremony. NSS and Youth Welfare Department actively participated in the programme. State Director NYKS Sayed Ali said that the state observed World Bicycle Day in 27 districts, a press release said.
