World Heritage Week from today, 'Monument mitro' honours to 3

For the first time, the Directorate of Archeology, Assam is going to award three ‘monument mitro’ honours to two persons and an organization during the celebration of the World Heritage Week from November 19-25, 2020.

GUWAHATI: For the first time, the Directorate of Archeology, Assam is going to award three 'monument mitro' honours to two persons and an organization during the celebration of the World Heritage Week from November 19-25, 2020.

According to the Directorate of Archeology, Assam the three who will receive the honour are – Krishna Kumar Singha of Rajbari in Hojai district, Nabin Buragohain of Sivasagar district and Ghuguha Dol Unnayan Committee of Dhemaji district.

On November 19, 2020, the Directorate of Archeology is going to hold a central programme at Na-pukhuri, a Heritage Site in Sivasagar where Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal is going to take part as the chief guest and departmental minister Keshab Mahanta as the special guest.

Talking to The Sentinel, Keshab Mahanta said, "Assam has 55 sites of archeological importance under the ASI (Archeological Survey of India) and 137 sites under the State Directorate of Archeology. The responsibility of preservation and development of these 137 sites lies with the State government. From November 19-25 UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) celebrates the annual World Heritage Week across countries. The objective of the week is to make people aware of the rich heritage and also strive for its preservation.

"The Central government has selected Sivasagar district as an 'iconic monument'. The State government is also trying to get Charaideo Maidam notified by UNESCO as a world heritage site. The State government has already allotted Rs 25 crore for the development of Charaideo Maidam and the preparation of the dossier to be submitted to the UNESCO for the world heritage site tag."
