Zoo Road flyover expected to open ahead of schedule

GUWAHATI: One of the major developmental projects in the city of Guwahati, the under-construction flyover on Zoo Road, is expected to be opened for the public ahead of its due date as the work on the same is going on ahead of schedule.

The project was initially estimated to be only 580 metres in length, and accordingly, the work was started after conducting the necessary surveys. It was later extended to a length of 2.2 kilometres, nearly four times the originally planned length. The total budget of the project was also increased to Rs 316.114 crore, and the timeline was extended to the beginning of March 2025.

According to official sources in the Public Works Department (PWD), the internal programme of the project is expected to be completed in October 2024, which is five months ahead of the deadline for the project. He also mentioned that although the construction phase of the project is creating traffic issues for the Guwahatians, once complete, it will resolve that problem completely.

The official also mentioned that there were initial delays in the supply of necessary materials as the project details changed. Also, as a part of the safety procedures, the majority of the heavy work is done at night, when the number of vehicles on the road is limited. The world could have been completed much earlier than the due date.
