Manipur's All Women Market Set To Reopen After 5 Months

According to the revised order, vendors will be divided into two groups with stall numbers allocated to each vendor by the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC).

Imphal: Nupi Keithel a market which only runs by women in Imphal of Manipur is ready to reopen after almost five months.

State chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar, who is the chairman of the state executive committee of the state disaster management authority, issued a revised order in this regard on Tuesday.

According to the revised order, vendors will be divided into two groups with stall numbers allocated to each vendor by the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC).

The vendors have to sit maintaining social distancing at least 6 feet between one another.

The revised order said that the vendor may be given an opportunity to sell her goods twice a week on a rotational basis however, on Sunday it will remain close for cleaning and sanitation.

On April 21, the Manipur government announced the immediate closure of the Nupi Keithel, one of Asia's largest women-run markets, located in Imphal, barely two months after its reopening, because of the second wave of Covid-19 in the state.

According to the people cited above, more than 3,500 license-holding women vendors sit at three Nupi Keithel market buildings in Imphal.

Earlier, Manipur government has lifted the day curfew and imposed a night curfew from 6 pm to 5 am in the entire state for 15 days from August 8 to 22. An order issued by Manipur Chief Secretary Dr. Rajesh Kumar, who is the chairman of the state executive committee of the state disaster management authority, informed the public that the night curfew will be implemented strictly across the state. "Deputy Commissioners shall issue necessary orders and, Superintendents of Police shall take necessary action to implement the orders strictly," the order read.
