In a dubious record, for the fifth consecutive year, Assam recorded the highest rate of crimes against women in 2021, according to the 'Crime in India' report of National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) for last year.

The rate is calculated as the number of crimes recorded for every one lakh people. For instance, if it is 10, it means that 10 in every one lakh of the population recorded a crime.

According to the NCRB data, the rate of crimes against women in Assam last year stood at 168.3, marking an increase from 154.3 in 2020. The next highest on the list were Odisha with a rate of 137.8, Haryana with 119.7, and Rajasthan with 105.4.

On top of it all, Assam was also named as the state with the most violent crimes recorded in 2021. Statistics in the bureau also revealed that Assam has continued to maintain the trend of recording an increase in such crimes after a dip in the previous year.
