Sensex Plunges 1,190 Points, Nifty Ends At 16,614 Due To Omicron Fears

New Delhi: Following the outbreak of omicron variant, the first day of the trading week on Monday witnessed a big drop as the equity indices on the BSE and NSE ended over 2 percent lower.

The Nifty (NIFTY 50) index of 50 major stocks listed on the National Stock Exchange closed at 16,614, down 371 points while the BSE Sensex closed 1,189.73 points down at 55,822.

However, in the afternoon, there was a slight correction in the market.

The biggest losers on the Sensex were Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, NTPC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Reliance Industries (RIL) and Bajaj Finserv. Hindustan Unilever and Dr Reddy's Laboratories were only the two gainers of the day.

Meanwhile, Shriram Properties made a weak debut and got listed at a discount of over 23 per cent from its issue price. It ended over 16 per cent lower on the NSE.

The sensitive index registered the days high and low at 56,538.15 and 55,132.68 respectively.
