This newspaper in its Sunday edition has carried a front-page news-story datelined New Delhi, in which the High Commissioner of Singapore in India has been quoted, as having said that many Assam products can be now directly exported to that country. This is a very encouraging statement for a state like Assam, which has been lagging behind in exports despite being rich in natural resources. While the news-story has also said that the Singapore High Commissioner had made the above-mentioned statement during the course of his visit to the Assam Pavilion at the 42nd India International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan, currently going on in the national capital, it is, however, not known exactly what are the products in the Assam Pavilion, with which he was impressed. According to official statistics available on the Internet, Singapore annually imports goods and products worth about 600 billion US dollars, which gives the country the 17th rank among the world’s top importers. Singapore’s top five import items include mineral oils, fuels, precious stones, metals, optical and medical equipment. On the other hand, the main products that India has exported to Singapore in the past three years are refined petroleum, jewellery and special purpose ships. Official documents say that Singapore is among India’s largest trade and investment partners in ASEAN and accounted for 27.3 % of our overall trade with ASEAN in 2021-22. Singapore is also the leading source of Foreign Direct Investment in India, and over the last 20 years the total investment in India from Singapore is almost 136.653 billion and accounts for nearly 23 percent of the total FDI inflows. Looking at India’s exports to Singapore in the past four or five years, one finds that the list also has several agricultural and allied products like onions, tea, cashew-nuts, crabs, milled rice, ground-nut, sugar, cocoa beans, cotton and beer. Assam unfortunately does not produce any of these items with the exception of tea. India in fact exports tea worth three million US dollars during 2022 to Singapore. Given this scenario, and given the fact that the Singapore envoy has shown keen interest, it is now time to seriously examine Assam’s export potential to Singapore. Such an opportunity should not be missed. And this responsibility does not lie just with the government. Private entrepreneurs and the corporate sector too have a huge role to play.
