Nowadays digital payment is very popular and used in a wider sense. It has immensely helped in making cash transactions. No doubt, sometimes cybercrimes might create hurdles in the system. If nobody falls in the trap of cybercrimes then the system can be very helpful. Now, we are all accustomed to make online payments of electricity bill, telephone bill, mobile bill, water bill, tuition fee, recharge of television, purchase of tickets for trains and buses etc. We cannot deny that the system might not be convenient for some, especially for the illiterates.
Initially, to make payment through net banking, a banker's cheque was levied for every transaction in addition to the amount required to be paid. But as time passed by, those charges were totally removed. This ultimately helped us in a wider sense.
The Government of Assam has opened two web portals – mywaterbill.in and gmdwsb.assam.gov.in – for the convenience of payment of water bill digitally. To make payment of water bill through digital mode, a banker's charge in addition to water bill needs to be paid. But on what basis the banker's cheque has been fixed is not known. To pay an amount less than Rs 500, the bank charge is Rs 12. In my opinion, this is too high. I request the authority concerned to reduce or remove the banker's charge.
