Northeast Frontier Railway must be congratulated for introducing a special train between Guwahati and New Haflong comprising vista dome coaches which will enable passengers to enjoy a 360-degree view of the scenic beauty of the surroundings, including the open sky above while onboard it. The Union Railway Ministry had announced the introduction of vista dome coaches in 2019 itself, this coaching is specially designed to let the passengers enjoy the beautiful sceneries through an all-glass roof. The choice of the Guwahati-Haflong section too is very apt, because the Barail range and Dima Hasao district of Assam, which constitutes one of the most beautiful places in the region, has remained the least promoted. Haflong, Jatinga, Panimur, Maibang, Mahur, Semkhor, Harangajao, Migrendisa, Umrongso – all these are amazingly beautiful places which have remained neglected just because of unscrupulous politicians and spineless bureaucrats who have mostly been at the helm of affairs have continued to understand the importance of these mini-heavens on earth. Unlawful organizations of militants, unregistered student and youth organizations, nexuses comprising a section of politicians, bureaucrats, contractors and criminals – all must be held responsible for practically ruining the beautiful Dima Hasao hill district which alone has the potential of contributing immensely towards high-end tourist inflow to Assam. Even now, one day ahead of the inaugural run of the new special train, a criminal gang had attacked and killed five truck drivers in the hill district, thus sending negative signals to potential visitors to Halfong and Jatinga. The Autonomous Council at Haflong, along with its hon'ble elected members have to play a crucial role in ensuring that the tourist special train with vista dome coaches runs without any hindrance. As for the Assam government, it cannot probably absolve itself of the 'crime' it had committed by failing to preserve the more than 100-year-old metre-gauge railway track around Haflong, which could have become a unique heritage steam-engine track.
