Oscar Nominations 2022: Indian Documentary 'Writing With Fire' Nominated In Best Documentary Feature Category

Writing With Fire is the first-ever documentary film from India to be on the list of 5 finalists for the Oscars category of Best Documentary Feature.

MUMBAI: Indian documentary film 'Writing With Fire' directed by Rintu Thomas and Shusmit Ghosh has won the Oscar nomination and it is the first-ever film from India to get nominated in the category of Best Documentary Feature.

The film has made history by becoming one of the 5 finalists in the Oscars list of Best Documentary Feature. It is also the first all-India independent production to get selected in the final list of Oscar nominations in the given category.

The film with his concept of depicting the journey of women journalists has successfully made it to the 94th Academy Awards nominations.

The documentary shows how the female journalists cover the story of a newspaper named Khabar Lahariya which is operated by Dalit women journalists in Bundelkhand of central and north India. It shows the entire journey of transforming the newspaper from print publication into an online mode of sharing news.

In December last year, the film had appeared on the Oscars shortlist along with other 15 films and now it has reached the list of five films to move ahead with the competition of Best Documentary Feature.

The director and producer of the film Shusmit Ghosh while speaking with the media expressed his happiness on their film being the first Indian nominee in such a category of Oscars.

He said that the film provides the life and time of fearless and powerful women journalists from the Dalit community who are seen redefining the meaning of power.

Writing With Fire has also bagged many other reputed awards that include the Sundance Film Festival- Audience Award, Sundance Film Festival- Special Jury Award: Impact for Change.

In the long list of Oscar nominations, two Indian films were included and they are Jai Bheem and Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea but these two films failed to run in the race of Oscars nominees.

Earlier, two Indian documentaries namely Period End of Sentence (2019) and Smile Pink (2008) were nominated for Oscars in the category of Best Documentary Short.

The 94th Academy Awards ceremony this time will take place on 27 March in Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
