Oscar-winning Black Acting Pioneer, Sidney Poitier Passes Away At 94, Know The Cause Of Death

The Bahamian-American actor and the first black Hollywood star Sidney Poitier passed away at the age of 95. The actor took his last breath on Thursday 6 January in Los Angeles, California in the United States.

On Friday 7 January the Bahamian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fred Mitchell informed about the death of legendary Hollywood star, Sidney Poitier through 'Eyewitness New Bahamas.'

According to sources Poitier died at his home in the US due to natural causes as he was suffering from various old-age ailments for a long time. With the death of Poitier, the Hollywood film industry has lost a great legend and a personality that is irreplaceable.

Hollywood stars including Will Smith, Michael B. Jordan and Halle Berry pay tribute to the legendary actor Sidney on his sudden demise and offer condolences to the family.

He was the first-ever black man to win the Oscar Award in the category of Best Actor. He won the Oscars for his excellent performance in the 1963 comedy-drama title 'Lilies of the field.'

Sidney Poitier is regarded as the regal star of the big screen who broke the racial barriers in the film industry and became a trailblazer in Hollywood. The acting legend has delivered his performances in more than 50 movies.

Apart from his acting, Poitier was also involved in the profession of ambassador and film director. He made his first film as director in 1972 with the western drama film titled 'Buck and the Preacher.'

For his great achievements in the field of acting and dedicated work, Sidney was honoured with various accolades including the Academy Award for Best Actor in the lead role (1964). With this, he became the first Bahamian and first American to win the Academy Award.

Sidney Poitier was born on 20 February 1927 in Miami, Florida of United States. He got married two times once with actress Juanita Hardy in 1950 with whom he parted ways in 1965 and then in 1976, he got married to Joanna Shimkus.

The actor had six girl children namely Beverly Poitier-Henderson, Gina Poitier, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Pamela Poitier, Anika Poitier and Sherri Poitier.

In the year 2009, Sidney received the Presidential Medal of Freedom which was awarded to him by President Barak Obama. He was also known widely as a social activist and remembered as a great inspiration for many.
