‘Superman: Legacy’: James Gunn Announced the Casting of David Corenswet as Next Superman.

MUMBAI: Director James Gunn said on Tuesday that rising US sensation David Corenswet will don Superman's iconic red cape for the latest time. The 29-year-old, best known as the star of the current Netflix series "Hollywood," will play the legendary part in "Superman: Legacy," which Warner Bros. plans to release in 2025.

The position is regarded as one of the most high-profile and closely scrutinised going in Hollywood because of Superman's status in popular culture. Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and most recently Henry Cavill have all portrayed Superman in films.

Cavill, a British actor who has starred as Superman in films including 2013's "Man of Steel," temporarily took on the role again for the "Black Adam" post-credits scene.

However, Warner, which was under new management following its merger with Discovery, put "Guardians of the Galaxy" filmmaker James Gunn and "Aquaman" producer Peter Safran in control of all films based on DC Comics superheroes last year. The two were tasked with reviving the DC movies, which have underperformed at the box office in comparison to the competing, record-breaking Marvel superhero movies and have suffered from a string of recent flops, including 'The Flash'.

After graduating from Juilliard in 2016, Corenswet, who has been acting on the side since he was nine years old, quickly secured guest starring roles on television.

His first notable appearance came in a 2017 episode of Elementary. He made a couple other guest star appearances before making a significant breakthrough in 2019 on The Politician as River. The series' launching event—Corenswet's character's suicide and covert romance with Payton played by Ben Platt—was intended to be another quick gig.

The film Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025, and Gunn plans to start filming early in 2019. For characters like Lex Luthor and the superhero team The Authority, who are anticipated to make their cinematic debut in Legacy before taking centre stage in their own, the casting process will now go on.
