Indian Who Own The Oscar And Brought The Golden Statue Home

Revolutionary filmmaker Satyajit Ray and Singer A.R Rahman are among the few that won the Academy Awards and brought the golden statue home.

India has started its journey in the Oscars with the 1957 film 'Mother India' directed by Mehboob Khan. The film was nominated in the category of Best Foreign Language.

Many other films like Salaam Bombay and Lagaan were also announced as the Oscars nominees in the same category. It may be mentioned that no Indian film has yet won the Oscar awards even after getting nominated in different categories.

Notably, Indian individuals had made it to the Oscars by successfully winning the prestigious award and making the country proud. A few Indian like singer A.R Rahman and costume designer Bhanu Athaiya has brought home the golden statue.

Here are Indians who won Oscars and brought the golden status home:

1. Bhanu Athaiya: Bhanu Athaiya, an Indian popular costume designer became the first Indian to win the Academy Awards for her work in the historical drama film in 1982 titled 'Gandhi.' Bhanu born in 1929 has worked in more than 100 films along with eminent personalities from national and international level such as Raj Kapoor, Vijay Anand, Yash Chopra, Richard Attenborough and Conrad rooks

2. Satyajit Ray: Indian legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray has won many national and international awards that including the 1955 Cannes Film Festival in the category of Best Human Document. Satyajit Raj was awarded the Oscars in the year 1992 for Lifetime Achievement.

3. Resul Pookutty: Indian sound engineer Resul Pookutty won the Oscars in the category of Best Sound Mixing for his sound work in the British romance drama 'Slumdog Millionaire' that won Oscars for Best Pictures. He was awarded the Academy Award in the 81st Academy Awards ceremony in 2009.

4. A.R Rahman: Music composer A.R. Rahman became the first Indian to get selected as the nominee in 3 categories of Oscars for his work in the British Indian movie 'Slumdog Millionaire.' The music legend made history by bringing home 2 Oscar awards, one he won for the original score and the other for the 'Jai Ho' song.

5. Gulzar: Indian lyrist Sampooran Singh Kalra known popularly as Gulzar won the prestigious Academy Awards in 2009 in the category of Best Original song for giving lyrics to the hit song Jai Ho.

Oscars also known as the Academy Awards are presented as an award for artistic and technical merit in the film industry across the globe.

It is the most prestigious award in the field of international entertainment presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Meanwhile, the nominees for 94th Academy Awards have been announced and the Indian documentary film 'Writing for Wire' by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh is nominated for Best Documentary Feature.

The 94th Academy Award ceremony on 27 March this year will present the reputed honour to the best films released from 1 March till 31 March and it will be organized in Dolby Theatres in California.
