She was one of the youngest actors who was awarded the National Film Award when she was twenty-two. She bagged the Best Supporting Actress Award for Fashion (2008) and two for Best Actress for Queen (2014) and Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015).
The actor is direct in being vocal regarding her opinion on films to any societal issues. One of her interview with Anupama Chopra shook social media when she commented against nepotism and gender bias in the Bollywood industry.
In another talk show episode 'Koffee with Karan' hosted by Karan Johar, the filmmaker, the actor pointed out the figure on him saying he is responsible to promote Nepotism in the industry and referring to him as the "Movie Mafia." Sometimes she is also glorified for her straight-forwardness.
