NEW DELHI: A new study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, the effectiveness of the Covid-19 vaccination may significantly diminish after six months if booster shots are not received, but there is also a significant decline in protection after six months.

According to the study, immunizations were 94% effective at preventing hospitalisation 50-100 days after being given the shot, but only 80.4 per cent effective 200-250 days later, with even faster reductions after 250 days.

The Providence study was able to uncover characteristics linked with decreasing vaccine effectiveness in addition to assessing vaccine effectiveness over time.

In March, the Moderna two-dose vaccine was 89 per cent effective; by September, it was just 58 per cent effective.

Over the same time frame, the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine went from 87 per cent to 45 per cent effective.

Over the course of six months, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine's effectiveness dropped from 86 per cent to 13 per cent.

According to the researchers, the study underlines the need for booster immunizations as well as preventative measures such as vaccine passports, vaccine requirements, masking, hand-washing, and social distancing.

The Moderna vaccination provided the best overall protection over time, according to the study, while the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine provided similar early protection but dropped more rapidly over time. In comparison to Moderna, people who received the Janssen vaccine had a greater risk of developing a serious breakthrough infection.

The researchers looked at data from roughly 50,000 hospital admissions between April and November of 2021 for the study.
