Beijing: China's actress turned business mogul, Zhao Wei, who had been one of the most-loved personalities in China for the last two decades had suddenly been erased completely from the internet.

Zhao Wei has had a successful career in China, proving her mettle in various fields. She had directed films that won her many awards and was a million-seller pop singer. She had also garnered a huge number of social media followers, with 86-million fans on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging site.

She also had gained massive profits as an investor in Chinese technology and entertainment companies.

However, Zhao Wei is nowhere to be found on the internet today. When one searches her name on the country's biggest video-streaming sites, nothing related to her comes up. All her projects have been removed from the internet, including the widely popular TV series "My Fair Princess". Her credits as a director in her acclaimed film "So Young" has also been removed.

This development has come after the Chinese government widened the restrictions on the country's entertainment industry. The Communist Party had banned the rankings of celebrities by name on social media last month after such a campaign was launched.

The artists who do not meet political or moral standards have also been banned by traditional broadcasters and streaming platforms on the orders of the Communist Party.

However, no public claim has been made by the government as to why Zhao Wei has disappeared from the internet.

"Zhao Wei is like a poster child for what the Communist Party sees as what's wrong with celebrity culture in China," a Chinese professor pointed out.
