Dhaka: Facebook, the global media giant is preparing to file a lawsuit- in a Bangladeshi court- against a Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) owned domain called 'facebook.com.bd'.
Facebook appointed Supreme Court lawyer, Barrister Moksadul Islam said, "A Bangladeshi company, A1 Software Limited, had created a local domain called facebook.com.bd and put it up for sale for USD 6 million."
Barrister Islam also said that this domain was found a few years back by Facebook and multiple legal notices had been sent since then to shut the domain down, but it wasn't done.
Every '.bd' domain is owned by BTCL.
Barrister Islam also said that the motive behind creating this domain is not confirmed yet as Facebook's name cannot be legally used anywhere else.
When contacted, Dr Md Rafiqul Matin, Managing Director at BTCL, he said that documents are under scrutiny because the domain was issued in 2008 before his tenure. Moreover, they maintain a digital logbook now.
Back in 2008, Facebook was not that popular in Bangladesh which could be a reason this mishap happened, added Matin.
Facebook is working on filing a lawsuit and a ban on the operation of the website with compensation of USD 50,000.
