NEW DELHI: The Biden administration has emphasized the crucial role India plays in ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region that is connected, prosperous, secure, and resilient. This statement comes ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official state visit to the United States. The US, India, and other world powers have been discussing the importance of maintaining a free and thriving Indo-Pacific in light of China's increasing military activities in the region.

According to the State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, the partnership between the US and India is highly significant, and they closely collaborate on vital priorities. India's role in promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific is essential for connectivity, prosperity, security, and resilience in the region. Secretary of State Tony Blinken looks forward to meeting Prime Minister Modi and other Indian delegates during their visit and working together to make progress on various consultative issues.

Prime Minister Modi's visit to the US will take place from June 21-24, following an invitation from President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. A state dinner will be hosted on June 22 in honor of PM Modi, and he will also deliver an address to the Joint Session of Congress on the same day.

Regarding visa delays in India, Miller acknowledged that the US consular teams have been exerting significant effort to process visa applications, particularly in categories that are crucial for the bilateral relationship between the two countries. The US government considers this a top priority and is committed to making further progress in this area.

On the topic of human rights issues in India, Miller stated that the US works closely with India on a range of issues and consistently raises concerns about human rights with Indian government officials. While these discussions are primarily held privately, the US government supports the right of every American to exercise their First Amendment rights and make their voices heard through peaceful protests.

Regarding US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, Miller mentioned that he has heard Garcetti is somewhat of a celebrity in India. He reiterated the significance of the US-India partnership and expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming visit, which will include hosting Prime Minister Modi at the White House, a state lunch at the State Department, and other engagements.

Eric Garcetti, the former Mayor of Los Angeles, officially became the US Ambassador to India in March. His nomination had been pending before the US Congress since July 2021, and he was nominated by President Joe Biden.

The Biden administration values its partnership with India and recognizes its importance in ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific. The upcoming visit of Prime Minister Modi to the US further highlights the significance of this relationship, and both countries are eager to strengthen their ties during this visit.
