BEIJING: China has seen a huge surge in the number of death in recent days. The recent ease in the lockdown measures has been said to be the main cause of the latest round of infections.

Following the protests across the country, the Xi Jinping-led Chinese Government eased some of the lockdown restrictions in the country. And this has led to another major surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in the country, resulting in an increased number of patients as well as deaths. Hospitals across major cities of the country including Beijing and Shanghai have been overwhelmed by the number of infections, and so are the funeral-related industry chains in these regions.

A health economist and epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding from Washington DC tweeted on Monday that the situation is 'Thermonuclear Bad' in China. He warned that more than 60% of the Chinese people are likely to be infected within the next 90 days. This roughly makes up for about 10% of the world's population. He also predicted a huge number of deaths in this new phase of infections in the country. He also shared a video showing a large number of patients in a hospital room, even on the floor.

He also mentioned that one of the key problems lies in the vaccine used in China. Apparently, it has a much lower effect against the virus, especially the Omicron variant of the same. Notably, the country has not reported any Covid related deaths since November 23, in spite of a sudden and steep rise in the number of infections and deaths.

China has been known to underreport its Covid infections as well as deaths since the very first phase of infections. But recent surveys in the hospitals and funeral houses in the capital city have proven otherwise. Also, the sale of Ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug has skyrocketed in the country leading to a shortage of the drug.
