Guwahati: A British man took romance to a whole other level with a red-hot gesture when while proposing to his girlfriend, he inadvertently burned down their shared apartment.

He was planning to propose to his girlfriend and lit hundreds of tea lights in their apartment, complete with balloons and wine in glasses. But things took a turn for the worse when he left to pick his girlfriend up from right around the corner and the candles that he had lit up, set their apartment on fire.

The South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue informed that as the man went "round the corner to collect his future wife, ready for the romantic moment, he came back to find the flat on fire and three fire engines on the way!"

The candles and tea lights that he left unattended started the fire that eventually burned down the apartment.

The fire department shared photos of the apartment on Facebook, writing: "Look closely at these photos and you'll see lots of burnt-out tea lights. Hundreds of them."

The photos have since gone viral on social media, with netizens leaving their reactions.

One person wrote, "And they say falling in love isn't dangerous ... he found his eternal flame,"

Nobody was injured in the apartment fire and last but not least, his girlfriend did say "yes!"
