New Delhi: Shanti Sethi, an Indian American Navy veteran of the United States, has joined Vice President Kamala Harris's office as her executive secretary and defence adviser.
Vice President's senior adviser Herbie Ziskend confirmed the Indian-American's appointment as the executive secretary and defence adviser of Kamala Harris.
It is to be noted that Shanti Sethi happens to be the first Indian-American commander of a major US Navy battleship.
As per her LinkedIn page, Shanti Sethi manages National Security Adviser information across the Vice President's Office.
Shanti Sethi was the head of USS Decatur, a guided-missile warship from December 2010 to May 2012. Apart from this, she also happened to be the first female commander of a US navy ship to visit India.
Notably, the combat exclusion law was still in place when she got enrolled in the US Navy in 1993; thus limiting her options. However, the exclusion law was repealed when she became an officer.
"As I was going into this very male-dominated workplace. I was able to move on to have a career path that was much more available to me," Sethi told to USA Today in an interview.
Sethi's father immigrated to the US from India during the early 1960s. She graduated from Norwich University in 1993 (which is when she also joined the Navy) with a degree in International Affairs.
She also holds a Masters of International Policy and Practice from the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris happens to be the first Indian-American woman to have been elected to the post of Vice President of the United States.
