RABAT: A major earthquake took place in the central region of Morocco late on Friday Night. The quake has caused widespread damage and the death of hundreds of people.
Local reports point to the number of deaths because of this natural disaster at 632. It was also mentioned that over 300 people are being treated at medical facilities across the region. The extent of damages has not been fully comprehended yet and a number of people are still expected to be trapped, but the authorities have mentioned that the major damages have been reported from the areas outside the major cities and towns.
United States Geological Survey informed that the quake had a magnitude of 6.8 when it hit at 11:11 PM, with the tremors lasting for several seconds. Morocco’s National Seismic Monitoring and Alert Network measured it at 7 on the Richter scale. A 4.9 magnitude aftershock also hit the affected areas just 19 minutes later.
The authorities also mentioned that the epicentre of the earthquake was about 70 kilometres south of Marrakech in the Atlas mountains. It was near the tallest peak in North Africa Toubkal and the popular ski resort Oukaimeden. The epicentre was said to be about 10 km below the surface
The earthquake was reportedly felt in Portugal and Algeria as well. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere and Algeria’s Civil Defence Agency confirmed that. But the Moroccan authorities have not made any comments regarding the number of dead or injured, and are concentrating on the search and rescue operations.
Several countries have expressed their grief regarding the incident. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, "Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time."
