STOCKHOLM: The Nobel Prize is one the most prestigious awards of the world and they are given out for exceptional works in a wide array of domains. They include Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace and Economics.
The process of declaring the winners started this Monday. And as of now, winners of three of the six categories have been announced by the expert committee. They are Medicine, Physics and Chemistry.
The first category for which results were declared on Monday was Medicine. Svante Paabo has been declared the winner in this category for the year. The Swedish researcher will receive the award for his work in unlocking secrets of Neanderthal DNA that provided key insights into the human immune system.
The second category for which results were declared on Tuesday was Physics. Three scientists namely Alain Aspect from France,John F Clauser from America and Anton Zeilinger from Austria will receive the prestigious award for their research in the field of quantum entanglement. Their research showed how tiny particles tend to retain a connection between them even after separation.
The third category where winners were declared yesterday was Chemistry. Three researchers were declared winners in this category as well. Professor Carolyn Bertozzi of Stanford University, Professor Barry Sharpless works in Scripps Research and Professor Morten Meldal works at the University of Copenhagen. They are being awarded for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry.
The winners of the remaining three categories will be declared in the course of this week. The founders of the Indian fact checker ALT News are among the nominees for the prestigious award this year in the Peace category.
Each award carries a Medal, a certificate and a cash amount of 10 million Swedish kronor (about $900,000). In the case of multiple awardees in a category, the cash prize is usually divided among them. The distribution of the awards will take place on the 10th of December. Created by Alfred Nobel, this award has covered 603 awards to a total of 962 laureates till 2020 since 1901.
