Guwahati: Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that a coronavirus vaccine has already been developed in the country and registered for use. One of Putin's daughters has already received a dose.
Putin at a government meeting on Tuesday said that the coronavirus vaccine developed by his country has already proven to be efficient during tests; the Russian coronavirus vaccine also offers "lasting immunity" from the virus, he added.
The Russian President declared that the vaccine had undergone all the requisite tests and one of his two daughters who was inoculated using the vaccine is now "feeling well"" Meanwhile, Russian authorities have said that medical workers, teachers and other risk groups will be the first to be inoculated.
Notably, Russia has become the first country to register a coronavirus vaccine. However, many scientists in the country and abroad have been skeptical. Critics have questioned the decision to register the vaccine before Phase 3 trials that normally last for months and involve thousands of people.
Russia's race to allow civilian use of a potential coronavirus vaccine before clinical trials are complete could put people at risk, said local association of multinational pharmaceutical companies. It was only on 13 July that the reports came out with Russia claiming that their two-part phase I trial was a success. However, Russia has not published any findings from its vaccine trials.
With 897,599 cases and 15,131 deaths, Russia is the 4th worst-hit country in the world.
