Islamabad: PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan. He will become the 23rd Prime Minister of Pakistan and will take the oath on April 11.
He will replace Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief and ex-PM Imran Khan, who lost a no-confidence vote in parliament after nearly four years in power.
The PML-N said that Shehbaz had submitted his nomination to be Pakistan`s next prime minister to the legislature on April 10.
Who is Shehbaz Sharif?
He happens to be the younger brother of three-time former Pakistan PM, Nawaz Sharif. His political career took off in 1990 when he was elected to the national assembly for the first time. However, both the brothers were forced to live in exile in Saudi Arabia following the military coup in 1999.
He returned to his home country in 2007 and was nominated for the post of PML-N president in 2017 but he was disqualified from the post after his brother was found guilty.
He was the chief minister of Pakistan's Punjab province for three terms. He also joined hands with China on development projects funded by Beijing and he was also praised by Chinese officials for being a man of action.
Chinese leader Zheng Xiaosong gave him the title 'Shehbaz speed' for completing projects before deadlines.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties nominated him for the post of Prime Minister. He was the leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan since August 2018.
It is to be noted that the process of electing the new leader of the House began on April 10 after prime minister Imran Khan was removed from office through the no-confidence vote, becoming the first premier in the country's history to be sent home after losing the trust of the House.
Pakistan has struggled with political instability since its formation in 1947 with multiple regime changes and military coups. No prime minister has ever completed a full five-year term.
