Surgery kills 2.1 mn in low, middle-income nations

London: Every year 2.1 million people in the low and middle-income countries die within 30 days post surgery. Researchers at the University of Birmingham say that globally the number of post-operative deaths is 4.2 million — at least 7.7 per cent of these deaths occur within 30 days of surgery while 2.97 million die each year as a result of HIV, TB or malaria.
