LONDON: In a courtroom revelation that has shocked the community, Maher Maaroufe, the accused 23-year-old Tunisian man, pleaded guilty to the charge of murdering Indian-origin student Sabita Thanwani within her university accommodation in north London’s Clerkenwell area.

The horrifying incident occurred on March 19 last year, subsequently revealing the details of their relationship and the tragic outcome.

Even as Maaroufe is preparing to be sentenced in September, the family of the victim is mourning the loss of a young woman known to be warm and compassionate.

In Friday’s hearing at the Old Bailey court, Maher Maaroufe stunned everyone in the courtroom when he admitted to his crime of killing 19-year-old Sabita Thanwani.

Maaroufe and Thanwani’s previously unknown connection came to light in court reports. It was revealed by the prosecution that the two had been in a relationship prior to the killing on the fateful morning. The harrowing event unfolded within the walls of the student accommodation and a neighbor is known to have alerted emergency services after hearing weird noises and screams coming from the room.

As law enforcement authorities rushed to the scene, the suspect managed to elude capture, leaving the scene before the police arrived. However, officers spotted him wearing a balaclava as he fled the area. The Metropolitan Police then launched a massive manhunt to bring the murderer Maher Maaroufe to justice. He was eventually apprehended and charged by police several days later.

Maher Maaroufe appeared via video link from the high-security psychiatric hospital Broadmoor in this week's hearing. His plea of manslaughter by means of diminished responsibility was accepted by the court, which shed light on the condition of his mental health during the tragic incident. The suspect was remanded back into custody as he awaits sentencing. He was assisted by an Arabic interpreter.

The court’s acceptance of this plea entails an important development in the legal proceedings and is ultimately set to determine the extent of Maaroufe's culpability and the sentence he will subsequently receive.

During the time of his arrest last year, Maher Maaroufe had exhibited violent behavior when he head-butted a police officer. Due to this, he had to face an additional charge of assault by beating an emergency worker. In court, Maaroufe pleaded guilty to this charge also, highlighting his disturbed state during the tragic killing of Sabita Thanwani.

Indian-origin Sabita Thanwani's family had released a heartfelt statement after her untimely death, describing her as "our angel" with a "radiant smile and incredible heart." This statement threw light on her caring nature and her willingness to help others. A void within her family and the wider community has been left with the loss of such a bright and compassionate individual.

Maher Maaroufe's sentencing has been scheduled by the court for September, when the full extent of the legal consequences faced by him will be determined. Meanwhile, Sabita Thanwani's family eagerly awaits the court's decision in their pursuit of justice, and hopes that the punishment meted out will reflect the gravity of their loss.
