Guwahati: Holi is around the corner with many looking forward to celebrating the festival of colors with their loved ones. The one thing which is certain is that the ones celebrating it will have loads of fun with all the mouthwatering food, lots of sweets, vibrant colours, splashes of water and perhaps some eggs!

However, one needs to be very cautious about their skin and hair and must take proper precautions to prevent any harm.

Here are some simple pre and post-care guidelines that should be followed to minimize the impact of colors on hairs, nails, and complexion.

Pre Holi care

  1. The exposed skin should be safeguarded by a barrier by applying coconut or mustard oil along with sunscreen for at least 15 minutes before playing with colours. Areas like ears, neck, and hands should not be neglected.
  2. It is advisable to moisturize the skin daily before the festival and one should also apply sunscreen. It is best to avoid facial bleach or chemical peel at least a week before Holi.
  3. It will be wise to put on some cotton clothes with full sleeves so as to ensure that the bare skin is not exposed to harmful colors.
  4. Nails should be properly trimmed so that the colors do not seep into them and glossy nail paint or clear-coated nail lacquer should also be applied.
  5. It is recommended to avoid chemical treatments like hair straightening and hair color treatment before Holi to prevent excessive dryness and hair damage. Oil can also be applied before the Holi event to easily get rid of colors from the hair.

Post Holi care

  1. As soon as Holi celebrations are done and dusted, the Holi colors must be immediately washed off. Gently remove the colors from the face and body by using a soap-free cleanser.
  2. Excessive scrubbing on the skin should be avoided at any cost as it might cause skin irritation and rashes.
  3. It is advisable to apply oil-based products to remove the harsh colors from the skin.
  4. It is recommended to use a paraben-free and sulfate-free shampoo to wash off the colors from the hair.
  5. After the colors are washed off, a thick layer of moisturizer and sunscreen should be applied to fix the damage.
  6. Treatment like chemical peeling should be avoided after Holi for at least a week.
