Srinagar: At least two terrorists were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district, police confirmed today. "Kulgam Encounter Update: 2 unidentified terrorists killed. Operation in progress," Kashmir Zone Police tweeted on Saturday (October 10), confirming the incident.
According to reports, security forces launched a cordon and search operation on Friday night based on inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area.
The search operation turned into an encounter after militants fired upon a security forces party, who retaliated. As the security forces zeroed in on the spot where terrorists were hiding, they came under a heavy volume of fire that triggered the encounter.
In the gunfight that ensued, as many as two terrorists were gunned down. A police official has confirmed that the operation is now over. One M4 Rifle and one Pistol were recovered from the spot.
Police have said that the identity and group affiliation of the terrorists is being ascertained.
On October 7, three terrorists were killed by the security forces in an encounter in the Sugan Zainapora area of Shopian district.
In another encounter, two terrorists were killed in the Samboora area of Awantipora district on September 27.
