PUNE: An out-of-control tanker wreaked havoc on the Mumbai-Bangalore Highway leading to the closure of the stretch for a very long time.

According to reports, more than forty vehicles were damaged in the incident causing a 48-vehicle pileup on the highway that needed several hours to clear up. No less than 20 people were injured in the accident out of which 6 needed to be taken to a medical facility. But thankfully no casualty was reported because of this accident.

The accident took place on the Navale Bridge in Pune on the Mumbai - Bangalore National Highway on Sunday at around 8:30 PM. Brake failure was speculated to be the main reason for the accident in the beginning, but it proved wrong in the preliminary investigations of the event.

The tanker was headed for Pune when the accident took place. The region is already known as an accident-prone area. The slope of the bridge combined with the high speeds of the vehicles passing through often cause accidents in the area.

Rescue teams from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority took care of the people injured in the accident and took steps to clear up the busy road.

Due to the high slope of the road and the high speed of vehicles, the Navale bridge area is prone to accidents. The damaged vehicles are being removed from the road.

"A major road accident occurred at Navale bridge on the Pune-Bengaluru highway in Pune in which about 48 vehicles got damaged. Rescue teams from the Pune Fire Brigade and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) have reached the spot," tweeted an official.

Preliminary investigation by the police as well as the transport department revealed that the accident was not a mechanical failure, but a human error. The driver named Maniram Chhotelal Yadav from Madhya Pradesh had switched off the ignition of the vehicle and was driving on neutral at high speeds on the downslope. So the brakes of the vehicle were not performing as they should have at the time of the accident.

The diver is absconding since the accident last night and he has been booked under necessary sections of the IPC and MVA.
