GUWAHATI: Assam and the entire Northeast Region had to face severe thunderstorms and heavy rains a few days back because of the cyclonic disturbance Sitrang. Now the southern states of the country are facing similar weather conditions.
The Center for Science and Environment has reported that these severe weather conditions are becoming more and more regular due to Global Warming. Extreme weather conditions are becoming a common event in unexpected regions of the country due to the same reason.
The ongoing weather disturbance is causing heavy rains in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Pondichery and Kerala. Coastal regions of the states have received way more rains than anticipated in the region leading to flooding at several places. Educational institutions have also been ordered to stay closed in view of this weather.
A report mentioned that 80 mm of rainfall was recorded in the Nungambakkam region of Chennai on November 1. This is the third highest amount of rainfall in a day in the last 72 years and highest in the last 30 years as per recorded history. 130 mm of rainfall was recorded on November 1,1990 in Nungambakkam. It also received 110 mm of precipitation in the year 1964. Pondicherry is also facing bad weather in the last few days and is expected to do the same in the coming days as well.
Andhra Pradesh is also facing severe weather disturbances in the last few days as a part of the same weather system. Heavy rains have been lashing various districts of the state during the last few days. Similar stories have been reported from Kerala and Karnataka.
Several regions of the Northeastern states were adversely affected by the weather disturbance last month. Rains during the cyclone caused a new spell of floods in Assam. Several hectares of cultivated land was submerged by the flood waters in different parts of the state. Damage to property was also reported during the cyclone as many houses and other structures were destroyed. Uprooted trees combined with heavy rains severed electrical as well as communication cables leading to huge problems in mobile services as well as daily activities.
