GUWAHATI: The organisers of the annual Amarnath Yatra decided to suspend the pilgrimage temporarily due to a bad weather spell and rains in different parts of Kashmir. They have halted the pilgrimage along both the Baltal and the Pahalgam routes of the Amarnath Yatra.
"The yatra has been suspended and no pilgrim is being allowed to move towards the holy cave shrine this morning," mentioned an official with the authorities. The Senior Superintendent of Police for the Ramban district of Kashmir mentioned that the Amarnath Yatra has been halted in the Chanderkota locality of his district as the weather has deteriorated in the Pahalgam belt.
Heavy showers which started in the early hours of Friday forced the authorities to announce the temporary suspension of the pilgrimage. And the pilgrims are currently being accommodated at the Baltal and the Nunwan base camps on the route of the pilgrimage. According to the authorities, a batch comprising 4600 pilgrims on their way to the Pahalgam base camp was halted in Chanderkote. However, a second batch comprising 2410 pilgrims travelling towards Baltal camp was allowed to proceed by the authorities. The officials also announced that the pilgrimage will resume as soon as the weather improves.
A total number of 17202 pilgrims visited the holy cave on Thursday, taking the total number of devotees to 84786 so far. A new batch of 7000 pilgrims has been dispatched from the Jammu base camp on Friday. These pilgrims left the Bhagawati Nagar Base camp in a convoy of 247 vehicles and tight security.
Out of that, 4600 pilgrims headed for Pahalgam left in a convoy of 153 vehicles, and a different convoy of 94 vehicles carrying 2,410 pilgrims left for the Baltal base camp.
