GUWAHATI: According to a study done by a major US university, Assam is projected to sell 100% electric three-wheelers by 2025, making it the first Indian state to meet the milestone. According to a recent study by the India ZEV Research Centre at the University of California Davis, Assam had about 85% of all new electric three-wheeler sales as of fiscal 2023, which ran from April 2022 to January 2023. The other two states in India to achieve such high levels of electrification in any segment were Uttarakhand and Chandigarh.

"Assam will probably sell entirely electric three-wheelers by 2025 if things continue as they are, making it one of the first states to do so both in India and internationally. What's more, Assam's overall 3W sales have increased as the state recovers from the pandemic, maintaining the strength of electric 3W sales "In its report, the University of California, Davis, stated.

With an emphasis on both supply-side incentives that encourage investments in EV manufacturing and demand-side incentives like car purchase subsidies, tax breaks, and incentives for charging infrastructure, over 25 Indian governments have now unveiled their respective State EV Policies. Many of states set goals for the electrification of vehicles by 2030 with various ambitions.

India has set a net zero goal for its energy use by 2070, but it hasn't set any sector-specific goals. In fact, when it comes to electrifying road transportation, it has emphasised state action as a major factor in EV adoption.

In the absence of a national EV target, state-level EV policy objectives might help guide India toward high ZEV adoption by acting as a significant market signal at the subnational level, fostering the development of demand, and creating a favorable environment for capital flow toward the EV ecosystem.

According to the report, the state of Assam has sold 38,710 electric 3Ws, 1,903 electric 2Ws (two-wheelers), and 90 electric 4Ws (four-wheelers) since the Assam EV Policy entered into effect in January 2022.
