New Delhi: This week, some of the parts of East and Northeast India could be in for heavy rainfall forecast across six states within the region between May 4 and 7.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) states that a cyclonic circulation lies over West Uttar Pradesh and neighbourhood as of Tuesday morning (May 4), and a trough runs from this circulation to Assam at lower levels.
This east-west trough is likely to continue over East and adjoining Northeast India for the next 3-4 days.
However, due to the influence of these meteorological conditions, widespread rains and thunderstorms are expected over the northeastern states. On the other hand, scattered rains and thundershowers are expected over the eastern states during the next four days. Isolated heavy rainfall is also possible over Assam and Meghalaya on May 4, 5, and 7, over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha on May 4, Arunachal Pradesh on May 5, and Gangetic West Bengal on May 4 and 5.
As per the source, thunderstorms, lightning activity, and gusty winds are also likely over most parts of the above regions during the next 3-4 days.
The IMD has issued an orange alert over Assam and Meghalaya on Tuesday, with an advice for the people to 'be prepared' for rough conditions. Meanwhile, the rest of the aforementioned states will be placed under a yellow watch with 'be aware' mark of local weather.
The report stated that between March 1 and May 3, Arunachal Pradesh (283.8 mm), Meghalaya (268.3 mm), Assam (121.8 mm), West Bengal (56.2 mm), and Odisha (37.5 mm) have all recorded 'deficit' rainfall as compared to their long-term average figures for this period.
