New Delhi: Soon after the incident of serving non-veg food to a vegetarian Jain passenger on an Air Indian flight came to light, the Jain community and the Gujarat Animal Welfare Boards have shot a letter to Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia seeking a ban on such meals inside domestic flights.

"This request is being made on behalf of vegetarian passengers...Strictly vegetarian passengers feel much more distressed and offended when non-veg food is served instead of veg food," board member Rajendra Shah said in the letter.

Rajendra Shah, a member of the Gujarat Animal Welfare Board stated that the people, who are strictly vegetarian feel offended and distressed when such non-veg foods are served in place of veg food.

The group demanded the ban after a non-veg meal was served accidentally to Raghevendra Jain, who was travelling from Tokyo to Delhi along with his family members.

The incident took place on 25th March on an Air India Flight and Raghevendra then took to Twitter to share how non-veg was served to him because of the complete negligence by the flight staff.

Jain said that he pre-booked vegetarian food and also confirmed it at the check-in counter but even after repeated confirmation the staff served him non-veg food.

He asked the crew members to recheck after which they reassured him that it was not non-veg food but vegetarian food.

''The crew didn't apologize for their mistake, in fact, harassed me throughout the journey,'' he added.

Later, a probe was initiated into the matter and the crew members of Air India's Tokyo to Delhi plane were prohibited from flying.

It may be mentioned that the letter from on ban of meaty meals on flights by the Jain community and the Gujarat Animal Welfare Boards comes amid the controversy on food policing.

In the previous week, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has ordered the shutdown of meat shops under the limits of the municipal body for the 9 days of the Navaratri festival.

Following this, East Delhi Mayor Shyam Sundar Agarwal and Ghaziabad mayor Asha Sharma also asked the meat vendors not to sell meats during the Navratri and close their shops.
