NEW DELHI: A video is now going viral of a group of people beating up a man for kissing his wife in the Saryu river in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya.

An angry mob can be seen pushing and pulling out the man from the river and then ganging up on him. One man can be seen hurling abuse and asking the husband if he has no family at home.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, netizens are now divided over the incident with a debate on Indian culture sparking off on Twitter.

While many tweeted pictures of ancient statues others pointed out how kissing is not a part of Indian culture.

The wife tries to protect her husband but fails to do so. The couple is eventually kicked out of the water by the mob.

Meanwhile, police have begun an investigation after a purported video of the incident went viral. A police officer said the exact date of the incident was yet to be ascertained even though some people claimed it had happened at Ram ki Paudi ghat on Tuesday.

The officer said they had not received any complaint regarding it yet.

"However, we are investigating the matter and trying to find the couple and the miscreants who attacked them," the officer said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shailesh Pandey said, "The matter is being probed."
