Biryani most-ordered food In India during lockdown: Swiggy

As per a report by the delivery app Swiggy, Indians "craved the most for Biryani" during the lockdown

Guwahati: Amid the Coronavirus pandemic, we have witnessed several people turning into chef overnight while some who could not turn have chose to order online delivery of food.

The "StatEATistics report: The Quarantine Edition" from food delivery platform Swiggy has registered 5.5 lakh orders of Biryani as and where restaurants were delivering meals across India. According to the report's verdict, Indians "craved the most for Biryani" during the lockdown. Biryani has topped among all the Indian dishes or cuisines across India for the last 3 months.

In all, Swiggy delivered 40 million orders across food, groceries, medicines, and other household items during India's lockdowns, the online food delivery platform said in its StatEATistics report: The Quarantine Edition.

In the number of orders, biryani was followed by orders for butter naan and masala dosa. The company has recorded 3,35,185 orders of butter naan and 3,31,423 orders of dosas across the nation.

The most frequently ordered dessert was the choco lava cake which was ordered around 1,29,000 times. The humble Gulab Jamun (84,558) and chic Butterscotch Mousse cake (27,317) followed suit.

Due to coronavirus induced lockdown, birthday parties moved to video calls, and virtual cake cutting sessions. According to the food delivery platform, it delivered nearly "1,20,000 cakes" to complete these celebrations.

As per reports, on an average, "65,000 meal orders" were placed by 8 pm each day to make sure food arrived in time for dinner.

"It was the busiest hour for Swiggy delivery partners and restaurants. On average, they (customers) chose to tip Rs.23.65, with one particularly generous customer tipping Rs. 2500!" the food delivery platform added.
