NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) MP Gautam Gambhir on February 9 started his second 'Jan Rasoi' canteen at New Ashok Nagar in his East Delhi constituency.
The canteen at New Ashok Nagar will serve lunch to 50 persons at a time.
It is to be mentioned that the former cricketer turned politician had earlier started a canteen in Gandhinagar on December 24, where up to 1,000 people are served every day.
The MP earlier had planned to open at least one 'Jan Rasoi' canteen in each of the 10 assembly constituencies in East Delhi.
Meanwhile, the 'Jan Rasoi' at Gandhi Nagar, which is one of the biggest wholesale garment markets in the country, is a fully modern canteen which provides lunch to those in need for just Re 1, according to a statement from his office.
The canteen has a capacity to seat 100 people at a time.
The project is being funded by Gautam Gambhir Foundation and the MP's personal resources, and has no government support, the statement said.
Some states run canteens which provide subsidised food to the needy but the national capital has no such facility where low priced good food is made available to people, Gambhir said.
"This is not just a kitchen, but a movement to feed those in need and end hunger… I only have my resources, which I want to use to help the most vulnerable," he said, adding that food is a basic necessity which still eludes many.
BJP national vice-president Baijayant Panda, who was at the launch of the canteen with Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta, said, "We have seen other state governments do it, but nothing of that sort has happened in Delhi before this."
"This is a historic occasion as such a thing is being in Delhi for the first time. We have seen other state governments opening subsidised canteens but nothing of that sort has happened in Delhi. I congratulate our MP for doing such an impeccable job," said Panda, who is also the in-charge of BJP in the national capital.
