Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has taken significant measures in the investigation of the death of Assam's Faizan Ahmed, a student from IIT Kharagpur. To delve deeper into the case, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) consisting of three members, led by IPS officer K Jayaraman, has been formed. The court has replaced the current Investigating Officer (IO) and granted the SIT the authority to conduct narco-analysis tests on the suspects.

Faizan's corpse was exhumed for a second autopsy when concerns were raised following the previous autopsy, and the results showed injuries suggesting a suspected murder. The court accepted the possibility of a cover-up while expressing displeasure with IIT Kharagpur's handling of the matter.

Faizan Ahmed's family had alleged that he was a victim of ragging, and the court had previously reprimanded the director of IIT Kharagpur for not taking appropriate action on a ragging complaint. The court's decision to allow narco-analysis tests on the suspects indicates a significant step towards uncovering the truth.

Last month, the West Bengal Police team exhumed Faizan Ahmed's body from a burial ground in Dibrugarh, Assam, following an order from the Calcutta High Court to conduct a second post-mortem at the Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta. The purpose was to determine whether his death was a suicide or not.

According to sources, after the second autopsy was conducted, the court issued an order stating that it was a homicide. The next hearing will decide who will be in charge of further investigating the matter. So far, the court has not allowed IIT Kharagpur to obtain a copy of the autopsy report, as per the sources.

It is worth noting that Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) addresses the punishment for the offense of murder. This section stipulates that the offender who commits murder shall be punished with either life imprisonment or the death penalty, along with a fine, depending on the severity of the crime.

Faizan Ahmed was a third-year mechanical engineering student at IIT Kharagpur. He was discovered in a partially melted state in a hostel room on October 14. Faizan's parents filed a writ petition in the Calcutta High Court, alleging that their son had been murdered.
