Srinagar: In a historic move, a gazette notification has been issued by Centre for paving the way for any citizen of India to buy land in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The notification called the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Adaptation of Central Laws) Third Order, 2020, comes into force with immediate effect.

Reacting to the Modi led government's order, former J&K Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah rejected the notification and sarcastically commented, "J&K is now up for sale".

Earlier on 5 August 2019 with the abrogation of Article 370, the act re-constituted the former state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, 'Jammu and Kashmir' and 'Ladakh'.

Before revocation of Article 370 and Article 35-A in August last year, non-residents could not buy any immovable property in J&K.

However, the new law have paved the way for non-residents to buy land in the union territory.
