Uttarakhand: Not less than 39 pilgrims died on the route during the onset of the Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand on Monday, since the commencement of the Yatra to the Himalayan temples on May 3. According to health officials, the devotees lost their lives due to high blood pressure, heart attack and mountain illness.

Dr Pradeep Bhardwaj of Six Sigma Healthcare, who was dispensing a set of free medical facilities on the route towards the Yatra, noted that pilgrims were coming in abundance to such towering mountain heights without undergoing acclimatization before moving towards the direction.

The Director-General of Health, Uttarakhand Dr Shailja Bhatt speaking to the media said that almost the deaths of all the pilgrims occurred on the travel path. He further stated that the health check-up of the worshippers was done at several sites on the routes alongside Rishikesh. The Director-General then advised the travellers who are not medically suitable to not proceed with travelling.

More than three lakh worshippers have arrived in the Chardham since the beginning of the Yatra which is taking place without Covid restrictions for the first time in two years.

The Chardham Yatra of the state sets about with the opening of the Gangotri and Yamunotri temples in the Uttarkashi district. Kedarnath in Rudraprayag district unfurls on May 6 and Badrinath in Chamoli district on May 8.

The sacred Chardham Yatra is one of the renowned Hindu pilgrimages in India. Chardham Yatra is synchronization of four holy expedition sites in the country.

It is believed that paying a visit to these spots helps in achieving 'moksha' (salvation). The four Dhams are known as Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameswaram. It is also considered that every Hindu should visit the Char Dhams in the course of one's lifetime.
