After the horrifying gang-rape incident in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras that followed nationwide outrage, people have been once again raising questions about women's safety in the country and the steps that government can take to reduce crimes against women.
Amid all the negative news, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has come up with a list of cities that have been found to be safe for women. Kolkata, the 'City of Joy' has emerged as India's safest city for women.
According to the report, Kolkata has the least number of sexual assaults with only 14 such cases reported in 2019. The data also revealed that the victims who lodged complaints alleging sexual assault in Kolkata in 2019 were all above 18 years. Further, no cases of attempt to rape or sexual harassment were reported that year.
Other cities like Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and Patna in Bihar have the least number of sexual harassment cases.
The NCRB data reveals that Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of crimes against women cases at over 53,000 followed by Rajasthan with over 41,000 and Maharashtra over 37,000. Delhi recorded over 12,000 cases of crime against women while Mumbai recorded over 6500 cases.
