NEW DELHI: The decision by the federal government to repeal three controversial farm legislation has been hailed by Congress as a triumph for the country's farmers. Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, took to Twitter to say that "arrogance" had humbled down to the farmers' Satyagraha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the country at 9 AM on Friday. The prime minister has made a remarkable U-turn, deciding to revoke all three agricultural reform measures that have provoked almost a year of enormous farmer demonstrations.

"Today, I want to inform everyone that we have decided to abolish all three agriculture laws," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a national speech.

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of the Centre's decision in a national speech on Friday, reactions from all political parties came in. The proposal to repeal the three farm rules was applauded by senior Congress politician Kapil Sibal, who said "wisdom" had dawned because of the forthcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

P Chidambaram, a prominent Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP, claimed the move was motivated by electoral fear rather than a shift in policy or heart.

"What democratic demonstrations cannot achieve, the fear of coming elections may do!" The revocation of the three agricultural legislation announced by the Prime Minister is not the result of a policy shift or a change of heart. Fear of elections is driving it!" he tweeted.

Earlier this afternoon, the prime minister bemoaned the fact that some farmers are still skeptical of the agriculture laws' advantages, pushing the government to make such a choice.

"A committee will be formed to decide things on all such matters, bearing the future in mind, in order to make MSP more efficient and transparent." Delegates from the federal government, state governments, farmers, agricultural experts, and agricultural economists would serve on the group, according to PM Modi.
