COVID-19 Update: India Reports over 3.6 Lakh Cases in a Global High, 3,293 Deaths

India on Wednesday reported 3,60,960 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus in a global high with 3,293 COVID-induced fatalities reported across the nation in the last 24 hours.

New Delhi- India yet again smashes its own previous record of the single-day highest spike in the cases of the novel coronavirus on Tuesday as it reported 3,60,960 fresh cases, the highest ever single-day spike recorded globally. In the last 24 hours, 3,293 fresh cases of COVID-induced fatalities were reported taking the total death toll of the country to 2.01 lakhs. Yesterday's surge in the cases of the novel coronavirus takes the total tally of the country's caseload to 1.79 crores while the active cases amount to 29.71 lakhs. 

Over 3 lakh COVID-19 cases have been reported in India for the seventh straight day, making it the second-worst coronavirus-affected country in the world.  

Maharastra still continues to be the worst COVID-19 affected state in the nation reporting over 66,000 fresh cases of coronavirus on Tuesday and 895 COVID-induced fatalities, the highest spike in the number of deaths witnessed by the state so far. 

The states Kerala, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi have the most number of infections after Maharashtra.

Kerela reported a whooping of over 30,000 new infections for the first time on Tuesday with a 255 percent rise of the active caseload in the state according to Kerela chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. 

The National Capital saw a record high in the cases of COVID-induced fatalities with about 381 more patients succumbing to death. With 24,149 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus reported on Tuesday, Delhi's total active cases now amount to over 98,000. 

Meanwhile, Assam reported 3,132 fresh cases of COVID-19 taking the total active caseload to 19,923. The highest COVID-19 contributing districts are Kamrup Metro with 1313 cases followed by Dibrugarh with 228 cases, Kamrup Rural with 197 cases, and Jorhat with 127 cases. A total of 18 deaths have been reported from the state with 5 fatalities from Kamrup Metro, 2 each from Cachar, Goalpara, and Nalbari, and 1 each from Kamrup Rural, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Hojai, Jorhat, Karimganj, and Sivasagar, taking the total death toll of the state to 1,233. The positivity rate is 5% while the recovery rate is 90.77%. Read more

The registration process for the vaccination drive which begins from May 1 for adults between the age of 18-45 will commence from today 4 PM onwards. Those eligible can register through the CoWin online portal or the Aarogya Setu app. Until now, only frontline workers and people above the age of 45 were allowed to administer the COVID-19 vaccine. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a review meeting with top officials to discuss the pandemic situation where he asked health officials to rapidly upgrade the health infrastructural system.
