NEW DELHI: The Delhi Cabinet today gave its approval for the establishment of its own school education board similar to other state boards.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made this announcement after today's cabinet meeting. "In today's cabinet meet, we have given approval to the constitution of a Delhi Board of School Education," said Kejriwal.

As informed by Kejriwal around 20 to 25 schools affiliated under the Central Board of Secondary Education CBSE will now be affiliated to the Delhi Board of School Education in the academic session 2021-22. However, the decision for selection of the schools to be converted under the new Board will be taken after due consultation with principals, teachers and parents. At present there are around 1,000 government schools and 1,700 private schools in the national capital.

"We hope that all schools will voluntarily get affiliated to this board within 4-5 years," said Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

The Delhi Government has come up with this idea of having its own board with an aim to impart education that prepares 'fiercely patriotic' and self-dependent students who will serve the society and the country in a selfless manner.

Addressing a virtual press conference Kejriwal stated that the board aims to bring international practices and high-end techniques in school education.

It needs to be mentioned here that the Aam Admi Party led Delhi Government has been working on improving the quality of education in the national capital.

Last year the Delhi government initiated the process of formation of its own school education board and constituted two committees — Delhi Education Board Committee and Delhi Curriculum Reform Committee — to work on it. Moreover, in its Budget 2020-21, the Delhi government had announced plans for curriculum reforms and creating a new board of education for the national capital.

Earlier, in January in a bid to provide quality education to the students and train the teachers, the Delhi government is took important steps to restructure the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and The District Institute of Education and Training (DIET). The restructuring process is expected to boost employment opportunities of teaching professionals as it has increased the number of posts in SCERT and DIET.
