NEW DELHI:

As a result of his remarks against allopathy during the ongoing COVID19 pandemic on July 19, Yog Guru Baba Ramdev finds himself in trouble as the Delhi High Court said on Thursday that it would hear a petition by seven doctors' organisations who are alleging public annoyance and misrepresentation against the Yog Guru.

The associations in court are the three Resident Doctors' Associations of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Rishikesh, Patna, and Bhubaneshwar, the Association of Resident Doctors of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, the Union of Resident Doctors of Punjab (URDP), the Resident Doctors' Association of the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College in Meerut, and the Telangana Junior Doctors' Association.

Senior lawyers Kapil Sibal, Akhil Sibal, and advocate Harshvardhan Kotla have represented the organisations.

They said that Ramdev was deceiving and misrepresenting to the general public that allopathy was to blame for the deaths of numerous people contaminated with the COVID19 virus, and that allopathic physicians were causing fatalities and profiting from the patients. The organisations claimed in their petition that Baba Ramdev was planting questions in the minds of the general public about the safety and efficiency of not just allopathic therapies but also COVID-19 vaccinations.

It is expected that Ramdev's remarks, as a very popular figure, will impact millions of people and divert them away from allopathic therapies, which are given as the standard type of care even by the government, they added. The organisations said that the disinformation push was nothing more than an advertisement and marketing plan to increase sales of Ramdev's products, such as Coronil, which purports to be an alternate therapy for COVID-19.

With the third wave of COVID-19 due to begin in August, the organisation has appealed for Ramdev's ongoing disinformation campaign to be stopped.

On June 3, the court summoned Ramdev in response to a petition by the Delhi Medical Association over his remarks against allopathic medications and his assertion that Patanjali's Coronil kit is a treatment for COVID-19.

At the time, the court refused to impose any restrictions on Ramdev, claiming that the allopathic profession was not in such jeopardy. It had, however, verbally requested that Ramdev's lawyers advise him not to make any inflammatory comments.
