Delhi: Police Arrest 'India's Biggest Car Thief'

According to police reports, 52-year-old Chauhan was living amidst a lavish lifestyle, which is inclusive of owning properties in Delhi, Mumbai and North East.

 Delhi: In a major development, the Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested a person who is said to be "India's biggest car thief".

As per reports, the nabbed person was identified as Anil Chauhan, and this marks the arrest of one of the most wanted car thieves, who is reported to have stolen more than 5000 cars from different parts of the country.

According to police reports, 52-year-old Chauhan was living amidst a lavish lifestyle, which is inclusive of owning properties in Delhi, Mumbai and North East. 

Additionally, the police also claimed that he is the biggest car thief in the country and was allegedly stealing an enormous amount of cars which counts to more than 5000 vehicles. Anil reached this statistic in the span of 27 years.

Acting on specific inputs, the Special Staff of Central Delhi Police launched an operation and eventually arrested Chauhan from the Desh Bandhu Gupta Road.

The police further updated that Anil is now involved in smuggling arms and allegedly he was supplying arms to banned organisations in the North Eastern states which he carried from Uttar Pradesh.

Previously, Chauhan used to live in the Khanpur area of Delhi. During that time he used to drive autorickshaws. He got himself to steal cars after the year 1995. At the start of his stealing journey, he used to steal Maruti 800.

Nepal, Jammu and Kashmir, and North Eastern states are notable places in the country where Anil used to steal cars. Apart from stealing, he has also killed some taxi drivers during his ventures, the police stated.

Eventually, Anil relocated to Assam and started residing there.

Authoritative proceedings against him also involve the Enforcement Directorate (ED) registering a money laundering case against him.

Previously, the Assam Police arrested Chauhan several times and in one of those arrests made by the latter, Chauhan was nabbed with a Congress MLA in 2015 which led him to spend five years in jail.

According to reports, there are 180 registered cases against him.

Other crimes by him include smuggling of rhinoceros horn in the northeastern state. He remained a Class-I contractor in the Assam government until the ED raided his premises and seized his property.
