JAMMU: The Army Public Schools at several places in the Jammu division have been closed down as a precautionary measure till May 20, following reports that terrorists may attack soft targets ahead of the G20 meet being held later in the month in Srinagar, according to officials.
The G20 meet in Srinagar of jammu & Kashmir is scheduled to be held from May 22 to 24. Prior to the global summit, an increase in the movement of terrorists has been noticed in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch in J&K, intelligence inputs suggested. A high alert has been sounded.
10 soldiers have died in two separate terrorist attacks in these areas since April 20, according to reports.
Senior officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, however, confirmed that two Army Public Schools in Rajouri district was closed down and students put on online teaching mode till May 20. These schools include Army’s Valley View Public School and Army’s Goodwill Public School.
However, sources said that as a precautionary measure, the Army’s Pinewood Public School in Hamirpur area, near Poonch district’s Bhimber Gali and Army Public School in Akhnoor have also been closed.
Meanwhile, the security forces, including police and paramilitary forces, have been put on heightened alert following reports of movement of suspicious people coming in from some quarters, according to the police.
On Wednesday morning, security forces conducted searches in Purani Poonch and localities near Deputy Commissioner’s office complex in the border town of Poonch, after reports emerged that movement of some suspicious people were noticed by some locals in the areas. As a precautionary measure, two private schools in the locality were also closed down.
The police and the CRPF carried out searches on Monday night in Dangri village, where seven civilians were killed and 14 injured in terrorist attacks in January, following reports that three unidentified people visited a woman living in a rent house and asked her to keep their bag. By the time the woman could manage to go downstairs and inform the landlord, the suspects had disappeared. The police was immediately apprised of the matter and CRPF personnel were deployed at the nearby pocket in the village, but searches yielded no result.
