NEW DELHI: Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has called for unity in this hour of "turmoil."

“Some of our youngsters are out on the street when they should be in their classrooms. Some of them are ending up in hospitals for being out on the streets," he said while delivering the 26th Annual Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Lecture in New Delhi, according to media reports.

He had also urged people to stand together and be "simply India."

A lot of celebrities had come out to take some kind of a stand on the protests surrounding CAA.

Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar had tweeted "Well done Mumbai! " in relation to the JNU solidarity protests organised at the Gateway of India.

Various parts of the country have been protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) which aims to protect religiously persecuted Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan by giving them Indian Citizenship. The cut-off date for those to be given citizenship in India has been fixed at, on or before 31 December 2014.
